What does year end mean to you? Me, I think of contending with holiday gatherings, entertaining my little one while I work furiously to complete all the tasks and campaigns that I’ve committed to here on the blog and trying my hardest to make it to midnight on Dec.31 – something at which I fail more often than I’d like to admit.
However, as a blog writer/business owner, there’s a whole other aspect to year end. It’s not all holidays, parties and the most wonderful time of the year. Actually, that’s not necessarily true, because who doesn’t like a good holiday party? But, it means much more, most of the time.
Consider everything that’s got to be done from now until the end of year, including tax time, while handling everything at home – it can be nightmarish.
So, let me make this a little easier for you: Consider these four tips to help you stay sane during year end. [Tweet “Here are some great tips mompreneurs can utilize to survive year end with their sanity intact. @SageNAmerica”]
1. Keep everything organized
Easier said than done, right? How are you supposed to keep things like receipts, vendor info and invoices where you’re supposed to be working while the little ones are running around at home? It’s easy – figure out a system that works for you. Whether this means putting important receipts in a trusty shoe box or diligently scanning and storing records in accounting software when you get them, trust your gut. Who cares what other mompreneurs do? Do what’s right for you.
2. Little things matter
This is obvious to any mom with kids. Think about Lego – they’re tiny and inconsequential, but it’s borderline excruciating if you step on one. Don’t forget the seemingly miniscule things that crop up at year end. For instance, do you have interns or contractors? If so, you need to remember that they might not around in January. Then there’s anti-virus software – do your subscriptions expire at the beginning of the year? These small things can snowball into big problems if you don’t plan for them.
3. Prioritize what you can
Dealing with year end is no easy task, and it’s not uncommon for things to be forgotten. Think about how simple it is to forget an integral ingredient when you’re food shopping. This can ruin a meal and require you to send your spouse out to battle grocery store crowds. If you do this at work the effects can be widespread and chances are there’s no white knight who’ll do your dirty work. So, hit the super-important stuff first to make sure it gets done. For instance, since taxes aren’t filed until the spring, you’ll probably be safe if obligations involving them get done in January.
4. Don’t forget to have a little fun
If you’re stressed and strung out on year end responsibilities, you’re going to be miserable. This isn’t the type of environment you want, so keep things lively when you can. Holiday parties, a fun lunch during the workday and gameifying monotonous tasks can make sure you get the job done and keep you happy and engaged.
