What is sexy?
When it comes to sexy, what is your definition? Do you automatically think about grooming as in your body hair needs to come off now, or are you an au natural kind of person? I’m thinking not. I’m thinking that perhaps you have other ideas about what sexy is, as I do.
Whatever your definition of sexy is, there is a retailer out there who is trying to redefine sexy and it includes pubic hair. An abundance of it.
Sexy is being redefined *cough* according to hipster retailer American Apparel’s Valentine’s Day advertising campaign in which mannequins display peekaboo pubes for all to see. It is causing hoards of people to gather around the shop front windows even at the time of writing this, snapping photos and sharing them across multiple social media platforms.
It’s become a sensation on Twitter, with American Apparel being retweeted more times than ever in their history.
All because of pubes.
The Ads
American Apparel is known for their provocative, almost pornographic ads. And yes, their latest stunt of displaying pubic hair on a mannequin is a bit shocking. But what this latest tactic is actually doing is signalling the need for an imminent change in the hipster guard.
This attempt to shock us and define sexy is boring. Just like their clothes.
This Is Not Sexy
Some sources say that American Apparel is close to filing bankruptcy, which if truth be told, this author thinks is about time. You’ve proven your point American Apparel, but I think it’s time to go.
Each time I’ve been into their store in Kitsilano Vancouver, BC I get a weird vibe. The staff are laid back to point where, well let’s just say, the level of service leaves a lot of room for improvement. And don’t ever try to take anything back.
Their return policy sucks. Big. Time. Their clothes are odd and strangely bland and definitely overpriced. All this combined leads to a far cry from sexy.
A (Not So New) Definition of Sexy
Women will never go to the effort to make sure their pubic hair is exposed. And although this may not be the point of this advertising stunt it brings me to my ultimate reason for writing this.
Sexy is not about displaying or not displaying pubic hair, groomed or not. Is that because I’m a mama and not a hipster? Should I get down with my au natural self?
It’s far more than that. Sexy is about being awesome in your own way. And if that means you don’t groom your pubic hair, all the power to you. Sexiness is about being your best and owning it because when you do, it oozes from your pores.
And by the way, retailers who strive for amazing service every time with a ‘bend over backwards attitude’ to make things right is very, very sexy.
#MassiveFail American Apparel.

I know right? It made me laugh too. I think if it were male mannequins our conversation would be very different.

BWAHAHA omg still hilarious that they even thought this was a good idea, and that it got past the idea table in the first place!!
