Today is one of those days that thoughts of love and general mushiness overcome most people. To you I say, Happy Valentine’s Day!
For those of us that struggle with what Valentine’s Day means to us, whether it be the marketing and hype or the perceived belief that if you’re not in love you’re nothing, I say Happy Valentine’s Day!
And for those of you who are struggling in this bit of your life, are looking to love yourself or others more, I say Happy Valentine’s Day to you too!
Tapping into mushy feelings
Regardless of what you might think about Valentine’s Day, our culture believes it is a day to express love to those we, well, love. And that ‘s ok with me. But it’s not ok to only show those we love on one day of the year, right?
How about tapping into those mushy lovey feelings more often people? Easier said than done.
Life has a way of getting in the way of love. Conflicting schedules, meals to be made, dishes to be done, the list goes on.
And the big one?
Love comes with pain. The pain of disappointment and of misunderstanding, of not being able to really understand another person. Ever.
But before you go thinking, ‘What’s the point then?’ I’m here to say that it’s all good.
‘It’s all good!’
We all need to feel the crappiness that come with letting the busy-ness of life neglect our feelings. We need to feel it in order to get to the good stuff that is real and awesome. To get to love.
Being brave enough to explore our emotions and to identify them helps unlock and repair our broken connections to ourselves, to others and to our humanity. Expressing those emotions with the one you love in a healthy and safe environment shows us and others we care a hell of a lot about what’s going on.
Emotions need to be acknowledged, not stuffed or pushed away. When you are able to feel those feelings clarity of mind and peace can be found on the other side of our struggles.
So, in honour of Valentine’s Day I wrote a mushy poem that has bits of not so mushy stuff through it. Just keepin’ it real.
I love you, my one and only Serious One.
You Are My Valentine
Your sweet smile
Overcomes
Under the guise of pain
And I recognize
we aRe the same
but see love in differEnt ways
My thoughts are one with yours
Your struggle is mine
Victory?
A step back to see what is blessed
Love
Endures most but doubt
No time to think
Time to let go and be free
In this we experience
Nothing save for surrender
Everlasting and unforsaken
Forever.
