I recently had the pleasure of hosting an event for Modern Mama that I believe will be a game changer. It was Mamas, Munchkins and Mutts and was held at the Bone and Bowl in the Olympic Village.
It was a small event, which Modern Mama does best, and it’s focus was on Kids and Dog Safety. Currently, I live in an area that is densely populated with dogs and kids. Every day, OLM and I have at least five interactions with dogs in the neighbourhood and for the most part they have been good.
But I do have concerns, as any parent to a young child does. My son is fearless, which in many ways will serve him as he gets older. But, when it comes to approaching dogs, sadly he leaps before he looks so to speak. We’ve had close calls but thankfully haven’t had anything bad happen.
It is for this reason that this workshop was created. I need to know what to do to help my son learn a healthy respect for dogs and at the same enjoy his interactions with them. And because I don’t have a lot of experience with dogs myself I wanted an expert to help us understand the basics of keeping kids safe and to prevent them from developing a fear of dogs.
Our expert dog trainer, Georgina Bradley did an amazing job of helping the kids who attended the event feel comfortable around our guest mutts, Bear the Pomeranian, Sketch the Border Collie, and the two Golden Doodles Archie and Maggie. It was a full house of kids and dogs.
You want to know what the most beautiful thing about this event was?
At the start of the event, two of the kids wouldn’t even come in the door when they saw the dogs. And then something magical happened. Those same girls were petting and giving Bear treats and at the end of the event, sitting alongside Sketch with not a care in the world.
I love it when magic happens.
Thank you to Betsy Cooper for hosting and to Georgina for imparting your wisdom. And of course to you mama, and the munchkins and mutts who attended.
