That’s awesome that you want to immigrate to Canada! We live in a beautiful country full of natural wonders, vast space and varied climes. The people are nice, mostly, and the food is pretty good. Well, we don’t have real Canadian food but do have cuisine from all over the world that we change and call our own. At least in Vancouver we do.
Reality Check
For those of you who don’t know, Canadians can be grumpy. They can jump to conclusions when they don’t think things through. Oh and they’re bitchy and take sides without knowing much about the truth. Oh wait, most humans do this don’t they? Ah, that’s because most of us like drama even though we don’t like to admit it.
But maybe that’s just me.
Anyway, I’ve written a letter to set some of those grumpy guts straight. Take what you like and leave the rest. See you in the comments!
A letter to the people of Canada
Dear grumpy people of Canada,
Do you want a world without borders?
I think that would be nice, in theory. The reality is, it would never happen. Living in a Utopian society where everyone gets along and never wrongs another would destroy the natural human drive to carve out a happier, fulfilled existence for ourselves.
No one would be happy living like this for long. Wars would start and well, we’d just be back to square one. Perhaps a different approach is needed as we all need to get along somehow, but that’s a topic for another day.
Earlier this week, Force Four Entertainment was on site with the CBSA to follow them as they arrived to arrest a particular subject who was working illegally in Vancouver. When they got to the construction site it was discovered that there were other naughty people suspected of working illegally too. Whose fault is that then? The film crew? How very short-sighted.
While the film crew probably got gold by being there that day, it is the appetite of the public for reality style tv that is ultimately disturbing. What does that say about our society? Oh, the shame.
Aside from this, there are countries whose immigration laws are far more strict than Canada’s. Are you saying that a film crew paid to document those who took the law into their own hands in the name of ‘saving themselves and their families’ by illegally immigrating to Canada, is a worse crime?
Get a grip, friends.
Just because the cameras happened to be there, doesn’t mean that illegal immigrants are now immune to the laws they breached.
Have you ever heard the saying,‘ When you point the finger at me, look at your hand as there are four pointing right back at you.’
Schools of Choice a Reality?
Are your kids in the school you’d like them to be in?
What if we all decided to put our kids in schools of our choice without going through the proper channels? Wouldn’t it be awesome if we all just showed up at a more desirable school of choice one day and put our kids in the classroom we liked best?
We could even spend the day with them. We’d say to the teacher,
‘It doesn’t matter that this school is full or that classroom has too many kids. We’ll just sit here on the floor and screw the system! Or better still, the kids who have been here longer, let them sit on the floor so they know what it feels like. While we’re at it, make sure you feed our kids too because we don’t think we should have to in your country!’
It would ever be more awesome if a film crew showed up just in time to catch it all on tape. But I digress.
Unfortunately people, there are hoops to jump through when you immigrate to another country. And guess what? You don’t get to decide how that is done. If you want to come to Canada, find out what you need to do to do it legally. End of.
Welcome to Canada
By the way, when you do come, I say welcome! We need people who want a better life for their families. We need people who will work hard to do their best and to contribute to the place they live by paying taxes and helping to shape and grow diversity in community.
We don’t need people who work under the table, rely on the system for longer than is needed, and use their kids as pawns to get what they want. Those kids don’t have a choice who their parents are.
Reaching for compassion,

There I said my two bits and believe it or not, I welcome yours. Let’s chat. And be kind. No point in getting crazy…or you’ll just prove my point.

I agree with you Dennis. Further to your comment, does that mean that people who came here because they were recruited are entitled to stay beyond that contract? The companies that hire them bear some responsibility however it is ultimately up to the individual to do the right thing. Is this a cultural bias? Perhaps. As far as the show is concerned, they were funded by the government and it is my belief that the government, perhaps mistakenly, thought that the show would paint border security in a positive light and may not have foreseen what could go wrong. What do you think the public would have said if Force Four decided not to film? They would have ripped them to shreds then too. Media spins stories in a way they think the public wants. If the public didn’t demand this type of tv, it wouldn’t be an issue. It’s a sad reflection of our need for drama. Ok, I’m done.

There are two issues here in my opinion. 1st is that “illegals” may not have come here in speculations of work; they were most likely recruited by companies wanting to benefit from cheap labour, and not having to pay workers comp, taxes etc. It is way easier to get the worker than the companies who shield themselves in numbered companies, and sub contractors. 2nd is the question of a federal agreement to sponsor this “reality entertainment”. As entertainment, this show is not working to show the workings of a government agency, but to further the divide.

I agree with Fran’s comment – as a person who has been trying for almost 3 years to get my boyfriend back in the country it is frustrating to hear these people whining about being caught working illegally here – yes he was working here without a permit as well but accepted when he got caught and returned to his own country and now we are jumping through all the hoops to get him back – not an easy process and made even harder by the people who do try to stay here and beat the system – I could go on and on about this but wont – glad to see someone actually commenting on the fact that these people were here illegally and not that fact that they were filmed!!
