I’ve never really been a traditional sort of person. Maybe it’s because I started my family so late or maybe it’s because I’ve always been a bit of a rebel. I’m still hearing about the Christmas that I insisted on not having turkey and opted for steak and Portobello mushrooms. Man that was good, but I understand better now why traditional meals at the holidays mean more than just what’s for dinner.
Now that we have a little one running the household priorities have shifted. A more peaceful existence comes from the sense of order family traditions bring. And that familiarity is important to him. Looking forward to something whether it’s time together on the weekend or going to a play, it seems to make sense that establishing holiday traditions is a natural consequence. But I don’t mind. Actually it’s really fun to see how excited our son gets, and frankly it’s a great way to motivate him to get dressed and get out of the house.
So this year I’ve made a special effort to bring tradition into our home for the holidays.
I created a bucket list of activities to do this holiday season and I have to admit I love crossing things off. Not only is there a great sense of accomplishment it’s also a comfort you’re desperately sleep deprived.
We also started a tradition of writing a letter to Santa at the North Pole, decorating our tree with popcorn, and will be going to the Vancouver Christmas Market to ride the carousel and drink spiced mulled wine amongst other fun stuff we have planned.
As for tonight we are going to finish decorating the tree and kick back and enjoy his favourite Christmas flick, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. I can relate to the Grinch but I’m working on letting it go.
In his letter to Santa our little monkey asked for one thing ~ a Batman Utility Belt. He was so excited to get one for himself that he’s asked me to make pseudo belts out of construction paper as practice. And for some reason he wanted to be tiger too, hence the tiger stripes he drew all over himself. Yikes! He’s a little character, always wanting to be a superhero or animal of one kind or other or both!
Unfortunately he went to the costume shop with his dad and saw a Batman Utility Belt on one on the racks. So what did he say then when I reminded him about his one wish for Christmas?
‘I don’t need one anymore because they’ve got one at the store’
I hope he enjoys the one we bought for him a few weeks ago as we scoured the internet far and wide for a child sized belt. We also got him the other accessories to go along so hopefully he won’t be disappointed. Having said that, we need back up.
Have you done all your shopping yet?
If you’re like me you’ve been sidelined by a few things – work, lack of sleep, the illness that is making its way through my people, and well the list goes on. And then there’s the fun stuff: parties, hosting dinners, open houses and trying to fit in visits with friends and family that can add stress. When is there time to shop?
Having said that I’m not too worried.
Thankfully, his favourite chocolate surprise is always a win at the holidays. We’ve got him a few things that are sure to make him smile.
KINDER® Surprise!
You’ll need quite a big stocking to fit the KINDER® Hollow Santa, KINDER® SURPRISE® 100g Christmas egg and the MAXI 150g. But it’s not really a problem, is it? Opening stockings are the best fun at Christmas so the bigger the better!
KINDER® Surprise treats are available at most retail outlets like London Drugs you can get quite the assortment of yummy treats. Now to keep him out the stores until Christmas, not an easy task however shopping is always more relaxing when he’s not about.
